HOW TO REFERENCE A THESIS OR DISSERTATION

 

In-text citation

 

Provide the surname of the author, the date and page numbers (whenever you make reference to a specific page or range of pages).

 

Examples

Jones (2000) argues that writing could enhance learning.

Violence against humanitarian aid workers is an issue that needs to be tackled urgently (Gifford 2008).

 

Reference

 

1. A thesis or dissertation accessed in print

 

Write the author’s surname and initials then the year in brackets. Provide the title in italics followed by a full stop. Write ‘Unpublished PhD thesis’ or ‘Unpublished dissertation’ as appropriate then add a full stop and give the place and the name of the university.

Jones, M. (2000) An Evaluation of Learning Through Writing. Unpublished PhD thesis. Coventry: Coventry University

 

2. A thesis or dissertation accessed electronically

 

Write the author’s surname and initials, then the year in brackets. Write the title of the thesis in italics, then write ‘online’ in square brackets. Then write ‘PhD thesis’ or ‘MA dissertation’ as appropriate then add a full stop and give the name of the University. Add ’available from’ and give the full web address or the thesis/dissertation directory address starting with < and ending with >, then give the date of access in square brackets.
