HOW TO REFERENCE REPORTS

 

1. Printed reports

 

In-text citation

 

Provide the surname/s of the author/s and the year of publication. If the report is produced by an organisation, list the name of the organisation as the author. Add page numbers, preceded by a colon, if you make reference to a specific page in the report.

 

Examples

 

It is essential for dietitians to provide advice on healthy food choices (Department of Health Committee of Dietetics 2006).

The Department of Health Committee of Dietetics (2006) states that it is essential for dietitians to provide advice on healthy food choices.

 

Reference

 

Give the author’s surname and initials or the corporate author then the year in brackets. Write the title of the report in italics, the series number if appropriate, then a full stop. Finally, give the place of publication followed by a colon then the publisher.

 

Example

 

Department of Health Committee of Dietetics (2006) A Report on Dietary Health no. 41. London: Stationery

2. Electronic reports

In-text citation

 

Provide the surname of the author and the year of publication. If the report is produced by an organisation, list the name of the organisation as the author. Add page numbers, preceded by a colon, if you make reference to a specific page in the report.

 

Examples

 

NHS England (2015: 8) aims to improve access to out-of-hours care by March 2017.

It is aimed that access to out-of-hours care should be improved by March 2017 (NHS England 2015:8).

 

Reference

 

Give the author’s surname and initials or the corporate author then the year in brackets. Write the title of the report in italics and give the number if appropriate, then write ‘online’ in square brackets. Then write ’available from’ and give the full web address starting with < and ending with >, then give the date of access in square brackets.

 

Example

 

NHS England (2015) Delivering the Forward View: NHS planning guidance 2016/17 – 2020/21 [online]

available from <https://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/planning-guid-16-17-20-21.pdf> [7 January 2016]
